FAQs

Are there any contraindications for myofascial release?

There are contraindications for myofascial release, and for your safety, we will complete a thorough history review and intake together. Some of the contraindications for MFR include open wounds, healing fractures, deep vein thromboses, malignancy, internal injuries, aneurysm, acute rheumatoid arthritis, cellulitis, systemic or localized infection, osteomyelitis, obstructive edema, hypersensitivity to skin, advanced diabetes, fever, contagious illness, or intracranial hemorrhage.

The following may be a complete contraindication for treatment, but we may also be able to work around the conditions: sutures, hematoma, and recent surgery (will need doctor release).

How will I feel during a session?

Many people experience a feeling of relaxation and relief, with a decrease in symptoms or an increase in range of motion. You may also have an increase in physical, mental, and emotional awareness. If you want to read more about what might happen during or after a Myofascial Treatment session, head here.

    How long are the sessions?

I am currently booking 60-minute sessions. You will have 60 minutes on the table plus 15 minutes of intake and a few minutes to gather yourself after the session is complete. I would suggest planning for your session length plus an additional 30 minutes, to be safe. For example, you should plan to be at the studio for 90 minutes if you are receiving a 60-minute session.

    What should I wear?

    My recommendation is:

    • Do not apply lotion or sunscreen prior to your appointment.
    • Women: Bra and underwear or a two-piece bathing suit preferred.
    • Men: Underwear, shorts, or swim trunks preferred.

Myofascial release is most effective when my hands can go under clothing to be directly on the skin; however, you are invited to dress to your comfort level. If you choose to wear long pants/long sleeves, avoid thick/bulky material such as jeans or a sweater.

As MFR is performed on the skin, please refrain from using any lotions or creams on the day of your visit, as this will make treatment difficult.

    Why clothing?

MFR is performed on bare skin, but being fully undressed is not necessary. Unlike the undressed-and-covered-up approach of most bodywork, our aim is to facilitate movement and freedom, and this is best done when you are clothed.

    What is the cancellation policy?

Please refer to my practice policies.

    Can I tip?

In Tennessee, licensed massage therapists are licensed healthcare professionals. As I consider myself to be a healthcare professional, I do not accept tips.

    How does bodywork benefit children/teenagers?

Children and adolescents receive the same physiological and psychological benefits from bodywork as adults. Bodywork for children can also aid in developing a healthy self-esteem and sense of well-being, especially during the formative years.

Bodywork can provide a tactile sense of connection that is missing in many countries around the world, especially the US. Childhood and adolescence can be stressful! Some of the benefits of bodywork for children and adolescents include:

    Your rights:

It is not my place or anyone else’s to force you into a traumatic position. My job is to follow your body. I will never force your body into positions it’s not ready to go into. I will respect your boundaries in the session. You can end or adjust the session at any time. Your body’s ability to set a boundary and have it honored is a precious healing lesson.

Your rights during your time with me include:

    • The right to control the amount of pressure applied in any area of your body.
    • The right to have complete privacy while dressing and undressing.
    • The right to feel comfortable with the amount of clothing to be removed for the session, and the areas of your body to be touched.
    • The right to talk or not talk during the session, and to share or not share your internal experiences during the session.
    • Please note that while we do not always drape (use a sheet/blanket) in clothed MFR sessions, you have the right to be draped at all times and to feel secure with the draping technique being used.
    • The right to be listened to carefully, and treated with respect, verbally and non-verbally.
    • The right to terminate the session at any time.
