FAQs

Are there any contraindications for integrative myofascial release?

There are contraindications for integrative myofascial release (MFR), and for your safety, we will complete a thorough history review and intake together. Some of the contraindications for MFR include open wounds, healing fractures, deep vein thromboses, malignancy, internal injuries, aneurysm, acute rheumatoid arthritis, cellulitis, systemic or localized infection, osteomyelitis, obstructive edema, hypersensitivity to skin, advanced diabetes, fever, contagious illness, or intracranial hemorrhage.

Conditions like sutures, hematoma, and recent surgery may require doctor’s clearance, but we may be able to work around them.

How will I feel during a session?

Each session is unique to your body’s needs, and your body’s response will also be unique. You might feel relaxed, uncomfortable, joyful, angry, or maybe even nothing at all. What’s important is to give awareness to whatever you feel (or don’t feel). Every sensation, or lack thereof, is a clue. Learning to listen to your body’s subtle messages is a key part of the process.

    How long are the sessions?

I am currently offering multiple session lengths. You’ll have the time you reserved on the table, plus 15 minutes for intake and a few minutes afterward to gather yourself. To make sure you have enough time for everything, I recommend planning for your session length plus an additional 30 minutes. For example, if you’ve booked a 75-minute session, plan to be unavailable for about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

    What should I wear?

For your comfort and our work together, it’s generally best to plan on being partially clothed. You’re welcome to wear the following, or change once you arrive:

    • Women: Bra and underwear or a two-piece bathing suit is preferred. No sunscreen or lotion.
    • Men: Underwear, shorts, or swim trunks are preferred. No sunscreen or lotion.

We’ll create a plan together based on your comfort level. If the techniques require more access to specific areas of the body, I may ask you to wear less clothing, though this will always be your choice and proper draping will be in place. If you prefer to wear more clothing, please avoid thick or bulky fabrics like jeans or sweaters.

    What is the cancellation policy?

Please refer to my practice policies.

    Can I tip?

In Tennessee, licensed massage therapists are licensed healthcare professionals. As I consider myself to be a healthcare professional, I do not accept tips.

    How does bodywork benefit children/teenagers?

Children and adolescents receive the same physiological and psychological benefits from bodywork as adults. Bodywork for children can also aid in developing a healthy self-esteem and sense of well-being, especially during the formative years.

Bodywork can provide a tactile sense of connection that is missing in many countries around the world, especially the US. Childhood and adolescence can be stressful! Some of the benefits of bodywork for children and adolescents include:

    Your rights:

My job is to follow your body. I will never force your body into positions it’s not ready to go into. I will respect your boundaries in the session. You can end or adjust the session at any time. Your body’s ability to set a boundary and have it honored is a precious healing lesson.

Your rights during your time with me include:

    • The right to control the amount of pressure applied in any area of your body.
    • The right to have complete privacy while dressing and undressing.
    • The right to feel comfortable with the amount of clothing to be removed for the session, and the areas of your body to be touched.
    • The right to talk or not talk during the session, and to share or not share your internal experiences during the session.
    • Please note that while we do not always drape (use a sheet/blanket) in clothed MFR sessions, you have the right to be draped at all times and to feel secure with the draping technique being used.
    • The right to be listened to carefully, and treated with respect, verbally and non-verbally.
    • The right to terminate the session at any time.
